Volunteer Programs

Breath of Dawn offers a range of volunteer and work exchange opportunities for individuals and groups looking to make a meaningful impact. Local community members can sign up to volunteer on-site—whether helping with daily animal care, assisting in the garden, or supporting events and educational activities. We welcome both one-time and recurring volunteers, including school groups, service clubs, and corporate teams. For those seeking a deeper, immersive experience, our educational exchange program through WWOOF allows participants to live and learn on the farm in exchange for hands-on work. From sustainable agriculture to humane animal care, there’s a way for everyone to get involved and grow with us.

For Individuals:

Getting involved in hands-on farm work and animal care offers a grounding, purpose-driven experience that reconnects you with nature and community. Whether you’re seeking personal growth, wellness through outdoor activity, or meaningful volunteer work, this kind of service leaves a lasting impact—on both the animals and yourself.

For Groups:

Group experiences on the farm foster teamwork, leadership, and practical learning outside the classroom or workspace. Students and service groups gain valuable insight into sustainability, food systems, and humane animal care—all while building real-world skills and contributing to a mission that matters.

For Professionals/Career Changers:

For those exploring new paths in animal welfare, agriculture, or community health, farm-based volunteerism or education exchanges provide direct, hands-on training. It’s a chance to develop technical knowledge, explore alternative lifestyles, and strengthen resumes with experience in land stewardship, nonprofit work, & rural outreach.

Building a future

Assisting with building projects will learn practical skills such as carpentry, fencing, basic tool use, and sustainable construction techniques while helping improve farm infrastructure and animal housing.

Growing for tomorrow

Working in the garden will experience hands-on learning in organic growing methods, planting, harvesting, composting, and seasonal crop care—gaining a deeper connection to the land and sustainable food systems.

Our education exchange program at Breath of Dawn offers individuals the opportunity to live and work on our 35-acre homestead in rural Virginia through a partnership with WWOOF (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms). Participants contribute to daily farm operations—including animal care, gardening, construction, and land stewardship—in exchange for immersive, hands-on education in sustainable agriculture and homesteading. This program supports personal development, fosters cultural exchange, and cultivates practical skills in rural living, while helping advance our mission of community-centered animal care and education.
